The Gear

One of the most liberating things about packing up and leaving is getting rid of all your old stuff. These are just a few of the bits and pieces that make life on the road easier.

Garmin Zumo GPS
We’d never used a GPS before, but the Zumo is possibly the best thing since sliced bread.

A little dumbed-down compared to some other models, but tough, and easy to use on the bike.

Ortlieb Roll Bags
These bags have sat on the backs of the bikes for more than a year, have been packed and unpacked hundreds of times and carted to and from countless cheap hotel rooms. Sometimes we curse them because they’re just big dumb black bags, which can make finding a pair of undies an exercise in frustration. However, they’re barely showing any signs of wear.

Ortlieb Folding Bowl
Another simple, but clever piece of kit, which we use daily for anything from washing clothes to pumping water.

Katadyn Pocket Filter

Rated for more water than we’ll drink in the foreseeable future, this little marvel of Swiss engineering filters a litre of water a minute, or until your arms give out.

Optimus Nova+ Multi-fuel Stove
Lucas sold his beloved twenty year old Trangia before we left, but has now become attached to this little beast. Runs on camp fuel, kerosene, diesel and unleaded.

AndyStrapz Luggage Straps
Anything that makes the business of packing and unpacking less of a chore, gets our approval.

They’re showing some signs of wear, especially where a few inches got melted off on the exhaust pipe. Oops.

Stainless Steel Mugs
Coffee. We’re addicted to the stuff.

Micnova Digital Grey Card
Even the best digital cameras can be pretty stupid when it comes to white balance.

Before

After

Mosquito Net
Its an Arms Race.

Things we’d do differently
Ann regrets not getting custom ear plugs fitted before we left.

Sometimes we both wish we had the balls to ditch everything and go two-up on a postie bike.
